Flavour of the Week: Habanera

Think Mexican eats are all about the takeaway? Think again. We visited neighbourhood taqueria Habanera and ate the place out of house and home

A great gateway between chain takeaway burritos and high-end Mexican hideouts, Habanera serves tacos, burritos, salads and a few house specials designed for sharing.

What to drink

Cocktails: we tried the Habanera Old Fashioned, made with a subtle chilli kick and cigar bitters, and the Get Out of Jalisco Free, built around Kraken rum and punctuated by honey and chilli.

What to eat

We started with corn chips with guacamole and salsa (obviously), then moved on to tacos, which come in threes. As well as the tried-and-tested fillings, we plumped for baja fish (beautifully deep-fried with chipotle mayo) and slow-cooked pork shoulder with pickled cabbage. Oh, and we must admit to sneaking in a burrito filled with chicken and avocado and more chipotle mayo. When in Rome...
