A truly classic cocktail has four elements: spirit; water; a bitter element; sugar. Kentucky bourbon brand Old Forester's signature Bourbon Smash has all of these: the bourbon makes up the spirit element, the ice takes care of the water, the lime provides a punch of sourness and bitterness, and the sugar is, er, sugar.

- 50ml Old Forester
- Lemon wedge (¼ lemon)
- 1 tsp white caster sugar
- 8 mint leaves
Add sugar and two teaspoons of water into an empty cocktail shaker and stir for 30 seconds or so. Pour all of the remaining ingredients and add ice. Shake vigorously and then pour into a tumbler full of crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig.
