Flor de Caña, a premium rum brand founded in 1890 in the exotic and tropical country of Nicaragua, is taking its historic commitment to sustainability to the next level: it has joined forces with eco-conscious bars, restaurants and consumers around the world to help reduce up to 15 tons of food waste by serving delicious cocktails made with the sustainably produced rum and ingredients derived from repurposed food scraps or leftovers from the local community.

Flor de Caña’s Zero Waste Cocktails initiative, now in its second year, works hand in hand with the bartending community in more than 30 countries to create unique and enjoyable sustainable cocktails. The initiative includes interactive and engaging social media campaigns to raise awareness on the importance of reducing food waste and invites consumers to be part of a larger cause: building a greener future together, one sustainable cocktail at a time.

In other words, you can quite literally say your cocktail is helping reduce food waste in your community when you visit a participating venue and enjoy a Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail. In the UK, over 40 bars and restaurants believed in this initiative and created their own Flor de Caña Sustainable Cocktail, including destinations like Islington's Laki Kane, Notting Hill's Trailer Happiness, Edinburgh's The Scran and Scallie, Glasgow's The Gannet, Edinburgh's Dragonfly, Aberdeen's 99 Bar & Kitchen, Inverness' The White House and West Hampstead's Wolfpack.

Not content with simply encouraging consumer change, Flor de Caña has also leveraged the Zero Waste Cocktails initiative to transform the industry by inspiring and supporting venues to adopt meaningful sustainable practices in their everyday operations. In alliance with the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), a global non-profit that promotes sustainability within the foodservice industry, Flor de Caña has provided participating venues with a practical ‘sustainable bar handbook’ and sustainability masterclasses with industry experts.

Juliane Caillouette-Nobel, Managing Director of the Sustainable Restaurant Association mentioned, “we're proud to continue in partnership with Flor de Caña on the Zero Waste Cocktails campaign which excites and engages thousands of bar staff and customers globally on an issue of huge importance.”

Flor de Caña is an exquisitely smooth, premium rum from a 5th generation family estate in tropical Nicaragua since 1890. It is naturally aged in bourbon barrels without sugar or artificial ingredients at the base of an active volcano and distilled with 100% renewable energy. It’s sustainably crafted from field to bottle and the world’s only Carbon Neutral and Fair Trade certified spirit.

The brand was honoured with the “Distillery Sustainability Award” and the “Ethical Award” during the 2021 Spirits Business Awards for its leadership in sustainable practices.
