Hated homework when you were at school? You won't hate it when it involves getting acquainted with loads of top-notch wines – because that's what you'll have to do if you take part in the Wine & Spirits Education Trust's (WSET) courses, which range from beginner level up to a fully-fledged diploma in wine and spirits, with an exam and a proper, industry-recognised qualification at the end of each one. It's not for the faint-hearted, but we can tell you now it's worth it, even if it's just to impress your mates down the pub.

If this sounds up your street, you're in luck: to celebrate London Wine Week, WSET is offering one lucky reader a place on its Level 1 Award in Wines course.

It's a beginners' course with a hands-on approach, exploring the main styles through sight, smell, and taste, while providing the skills to understand the key factors affecting flavours and aromas and describe them accurately using WSET's Systematic Approach to Tasting.

Having learnt how to identify the key characteristics of acidity, sweetness and tannin levels, you are then presented with a plate of sweet, salty, spicy, acidic and fatty foods to learn how to perfectly pair wine with food – good food and drink? Sounds terrible.

For the budding collector, there is also a section on how to store wines and tips to perfect service from temperature to glassware. Once you've successfully completed the course, you'll get a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

You're in safe hands with WSET – it's the largest global provider of wine and spirits qualifications for beginner enthusiasts to expert professionals. Courses are offered through Approved Programme Providers worldwide, ranging from one day Level 1 Award in Wines, Spirits or Sake, up to the full Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits.
